On Sunday morning I let molly sleep in for awhile. After all, it was her vacation too. I usually have to get her up early so I can get the cast made so it can start drying. Today however I was not as concerned about that. I had a surprise for her that day.
When she finally got up and got her shower I was ready to get casting. I again casted her left leg in a full cast. But this time it wasn't quite as high, and this time she got her first fiberglass cast. This was only my second fiberglass cast I have ever done.
Now, I must tell you that I really prefer plaster casts for various reasons. However, I was extremely impressed with the fiberglass. It is much easier to work with, dries in no time, is actually easier to remove which surprised me, and, is much, much cleaner to use, both applying and removing. No doubt about it, fiberglass is pretty neat stuff, but, I still like the looks and feel of a well applied, dried, decorated, plaster cast. Molly much preferred the reduced weight of the fiberglass cast compared to the huge chunk of plaster she dragged around all day the day before. Not to mention that this cast was a little shorter and wasn't digging into sensitive areas like the last one did.
Well, after letting Molly sleep late, and since the cast was ready so quickly, we were ready to go. We got her dressed and she wore a short jumper that I again bought with her casted in mind. We didn't have as much time that day because we had to go home later. We had some breakfast and decided to go to an outlet mall. We went the wrong way and got stuck in traffic for awhile. I just passed the time with Molly's cast resting in my lap feeling that fiberglass.
We finally got to the outlet mall and found a parking spot. I got Molly's crutches for her and off we went. Molly was still pretty wore out from that heavy plaster cast from the day before, and, although this cast was quite a bit lighter, she still got tired quickly. I suggested renting a wheelchair to make it easier for her. She had not responded well to this suggestion in the past, saying she did not want to look like a cripple, but this time she was ready to sit down and have me push her around for awhile.
I really loved going to the customer service desk and asking for that wheelchair, pointing my wife out to the girl there as she sat on a bench across the mall with her cast propped up, and explaining how she was having a little trouble getting around.
We spent a few hours shopping around there and I really liked pushing her around in the wheelchair. I always feel bad that I make her crutch around in those big casts. I know she doesn't like that part, gets tired out, but always keeps going for my sake. Now I could take her all over and not have to worry about how tired she was getting. I also realized that pushing her around like that gave me a great view of her cast propped up like that, as well as a good vantage point to catch people sneaking glances at her cast.
My favorite part of that day however, was when we stopped at a little jewelry boutique and picked out a toe ring for her. The girl at the boutique was very friendly and helped her try on several different toe rings, slipping them on the toes sticking out the end of the cast. We finally picked one and it was the first time Molly ever wore one. It definitely wouldn't be the last.
We had to leave way to early for me, but then we always do when we're doing this. I got to hold that cast in my lap
almost all the way home, and we did stop at a nice restaurant for dinner before I took it off. We stopped at a park and
found a private place to remove her cast, but first I had her pose for some pictures of her first fiberglass cast.
