Branco writes: Its been a while. I finally had a sighting at the local mall today. A lady in a plaster SLC, bulky thing. She had quite small toes but cute. It wasn't easy to get the pics, I guess I have to upgrade my digital camera. Although there wasn't a heel on the cast she was walking on it, I think it might be one of those half cast splint types. I had the chance to follow her up some escalators and it was an interesting sight as she had some real difficulties. |

Angelicast and her fabulous shoulder spica!
#1--Here's Angelicast pointing out to a bystander where she "broke" her arm
(medically accurate but still a little white lie!). Anyone checking out the
cast would be convinced this was a serious fracture!
#2--Angelicast having a snack in a crowded restaurant where everyone seemed
to think it was just a long arm cast. This was followed up by parading
around outside during 5:00 rush hour and getting lots of attention from the
cars in traffic.

Angelica and her fantastic Risser Cast. Cast and pictures by 'Rider'
I asked Angelica a few questions about her adventure: Here's her reply:
Hi JD!
The following is in answer to your questions and to put with my photos (Thanks
for putting them up!).
I had had a body cast before, but I wanted another one. Rider and I had been
talking about it for a while and finally decided on a week-end to actually
enjoy it.
He casted me Friday and I had all day to let it dry. The first night I slept
in an upright position in order not to lose any of its fantastic shape. Then
I could lie on my back(!) and get some rest.
Unfortunately (perhaps?!) we didn't get to do any publicking, this one was for
private showing only. However, Rider and I did have a great time taking
photos and even doing a little video-taping (coming soon to a casting site
near you!).
I had no problem walking, but getting from sitting to a standing position
sometimes required a bit of rocking on my part. Adjusting to having to turn
the whole body instead of my head took a little while. I'd try and peek over
my shoulder, but couldn't budge. Eating wasn't bad. Granted, I wasn't taking
any large bites, but it was do-able with patience.
Rider is a great caster. It was very comfortable and very solid.
I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed the cast!!

Branco follows up on some earlier pictures (posted 12/5/99 on this page below): "I didn't manage to prevent myself from going back to this nice lady's house once more. In fact I couldn't stop thinking about this whole affair. Therefore, yesterday I repeated my offer and once more she was very open. She seemed even more curious about my interest in her than myself about her ! Maybe something to do with the flowers that I sent her in the meantime... Apparently she broke her ankle while going over a step (one only!). The "mystical" 6 weeks are over next Friday and I will not be able to return there, so these are the last pics. Enjoy them. Note the new grafitti on the cast. |

RD writes about this picture: "I wish I had a find this good once a week! Yes, it is a medical cast. She was the topic of the show (Slice of Life - shows women in various occupations and what they do at work on a daily basis) and was an orthopedic surgeon, and she was talking about how she came to like orthopedics when she was 17 and sustained a knee injury (it didn't say how), and it was misdiagnosed. So that caused her to investigate and learn all about the knee and then orthopedics." |

Branco tells how he got these pictures: "The greatest thing happened to me today. Saw this lady walking into her house wearing a SLWC. Went home fetched my camera, went up to her house, offered her about 25$ to take her pic and guess what, she accepted. Application of a walking iron. This device is seldom, if ever, used today, but it has nostalgic value. The
typical walking iron was straight, as shown here, and contacted the ground in-line with the patient's leg. This made walking difficult because the toes tended to touch the ground as the person moved forward. The toeplate included with this particular cast provides protection for the toes. A rubber walking heel is shifted toward the center of the foot, making it easier to walk without dragging one's toes on the ground. |

StratoCaster writes about this picture: "I like this picture very much, because it always reminds me of the story how I got it: It was 5 or 6 years ago, when I still was in highschool. One morning I went to school, and what did I see? There was a poster with this beautiful cast hanging in the window of a bank; and this poster was VERY big! It hung there for more than six months, and it was a big pleasure for me to look at it two times every weekday (on my way to school and back). The poster was a promotion for the insurances sold by this bank. There was a pamphlet available for each of these insurances, and on the cover of the one for the accident insurance was this cast! You could simply go to this bank and take one (or more). I tried hard to get this pamphlet, but I was always too late. I was told by an employee of the bank that these pamphlets are out after a few hours, everytime! But nobody was interested in the other pamphlets of such boring things like car or liability insurances....... At this time years ago it was the proof for me, that I wasn't the only castlover on earth. This realization was a big relief for me! After some months I finally got a pamphlet (it was the last in this branch of the bank). By the way: Although the promotion of this insurance was such a success, the bank stopped selling the insurance because only very few people took one !!!" -- StratoCaster |

Connolly was the first woman ever to win the grand slam in 1953, taking first place in the Australian and French Opens, Wimbledon and the US Open. Connolly lost only four singles matches in her career which was tragically cut short in 1954 when she suffered a broken leg when the chute on a cement truck came loose and struck her while she was horseback riding.
