This device allows the patient to have mobility of the joints while healing. I once saw a woman being interviewed on TV with such a device on her lower right arm. She moved her hand and arm as she talked just as naturally as if she didn't have an injury. I've also seen people with one of these on their leg, crutching along quite well. Apparently it's a very effective treatment method for serious fractures.

Castgirl II informs us: "I heard she tore some tendons in her ankle, that's why she is in a cast."

"I looked up and realized that the girl had a LLC on her left leg. I suddenly became sober and threw on the VTR. There were only two or three more minutes to go, but I didn't want to miss a single sight. I checked the TV-menu for a rerun but didn't find any."

"Later I went to bed and tried to imagine the 40 minutes I had missed. At about 4:00 this morning I woke up because I was thirsty and thought about watching the 5 min video again. I switched on the set and... saw the girl entering the stage! There was an unscheduled rerun and I woke up for it!!! There must be a god in heaven."

"This girl [a local TV personality] is so zany I knew she would be posing in a real (medical) cast and shortly after the magazine came out I saw an ad on TV for her New Year's Eve show. The show was called 'Plastered & Legless'..she waved her cast under the camera several times..interviewed a ball player with a broken foot..(but he was only in a brace) and then had a girl get a plaster cast made of her breasts (huge, by the way)..it's apparently the new yuppie thing to do..you then hang the finished model on the wall...All in all I did not find the show highly amusing...mildly funny would be my classification."

If current research is successful, doctors may someday be able to treat broken bones simply by injecting materials into the fracture area.

Clinical studies are under way on the use of injectable compounds, including:

Bone paste--This cement-like material with a chemistry similar to bone could one day reduce the need for casts. When injected into a fracture, the paste forms carbonated apatite, the main ingredient of bone.

Preliminary studies show it takes just 10 minutes for the paste to solidify. It's as hard as normal bone within 12 hours. Your body seems to treat the material as if it were bone, so side effects may be few. The paste eventually dissolves and is replaced with natural bone.

Bone paste is being tested on wrist fractures. Future studies will evaluate its effectiveness on knee and hip fractures.The paste is already approved in the Netherlands.

Michelle suffered a stress fracture of the second toe on her left foot in August, 1997. This was aggravated in subsequent competitions and on Nov 10 her left foot was placed in a cast. The cast was removed on Nov 19. She will wear a removable cast for the next two weeks but will be able to practice. The 17-year-old Kwan is expected to be healthy for the national championships Jan. 4-11 at Philadelphia.

Follow up: Michelle won the silver medal in the Winter Olympics February, 1998.
