Casting Tips - Illustrated Part Two

Now we're getting to the most interesting phase of the cast, application of the plaster bandages!

Step Two:
Applying the Plaster...
The first roll of plaster is dipped to wet it, while several more rolls lie waiting on the drop cloth.

When covering the foot and ankle you may find it easier to work with only one-half of a roll at a time.  Put your finger under the free end of the plaster before dipping it in the water.

The cast begins at the toes, with the first roll rolling up to include the ankle and a few inches of the lower leg...

Overlap each layer about 50 percent.  Don't pull the bandage tight, just lay it smoothly over the contours of your foot and ankle.  As you finish each roll, smooth the plaster to fuse the layers together.  Good fusing is important for a strong cast.

Step 2 (cont)...

Plaster is rolled up over the foot and ankle to the lower leg.

Another roll of fresh plaster continues the cast from ankle up the lower leg towards the knee...
