Casting Tips - Illustrated Part Three

Completing the Cast

Once the plaster reaches the knee, it's time for step 3.

Step 3:  As the cast climbs to include the knee, it's important to keep the knee from moving and cracking the freshly setting cast until fully set..

It's convenient to rest your foot on a cushion that is wrapped in a plastic bag. This keeps from making a flat spot in the heel or foot. A flat spot can cause a lot of discomfort when the cast dries.

The plaster is rolled to the top of the thigh, being careful to mold and shape each new roll into the previous layer.

You may want to reinforce behind the knee and under the upper leg with extra plaster, unless you are making a really thick, heavy cast.

The finished, full-leg cast!

You can make the outer surface very smooth by rubbing it with a soft cloth while it's still damp.

A really nice cast, Brian !
